The research directions are mainly driven by the need to address the challenges pertaining to Networking technologies and networked systems in view of the proliferation of new Broadband & mobile applications, and data services that has pushed the traffic demands exponentially. In this view, the recent focus of the department is on the design and development of smart and robust software-centric and programmable network solutions with a clear emphasis on 5G network design requirements.
The R&D activities are concentrated into three Research Units within the Future Networks Research Line:
- Mobile and Wireless Networks
- Transport Networks
- Network Softwarization
The research priorities within the R&D units are implemented through five main horizontal technical instruments:
- Network Resources optimization and management
- Application-centric/Application-defined Networking
- Software-Defined Networking
- Multi-Layer, Multi-Domain Network/Service Orchestration
- Virtualization of Infrastructure and Network Functions
Beyond the horizontal research dimensions, the FuN Research Line closely collaborates with other research lines on experimentation activities within the umbrella of the SIRIS experimentation platform, with specific focus towards the rapid prototyping and experimentation of 5G networks.
Our department has established trusted collaborations over the years with internationally reputed companies (CISCO, Orange, Thales Communications & Security, Deutsche Telekom, Telecom Italia to name a few) and Italian enterprises (Trentino Networks, Futur3, Athonet, FAR Systems etc) together with whom our researchers and engineers are constantly engaging in various development and innovation projects.
FuN contributes to various standardization activities (e.g., 3GPP, ETSI, IETF) surrounding mobile systems and SDN/NFV. The group is also involved as contributors to different open networking initiatives in the open source domain for SDN (ONOS, Open Day Light) and NFV (OPNFV, OSM).
The department actively provides consultancy services to the European GEANT experimental network infrastructure through close cooperation and partnership established with the Italian GARR network.
